What is a sustainable business?

To understand this definition in terms of business, we will define sustainable business as one that operates in the interest of all current and future stakeholders in a manner that ensures the long-term health and survival of the business and its associated economic, social, and environmental systems.

Thus, a sustainable business is concerned about the current and future social, environmental, and economic impacts associated with its operations. Ideally, the sustainable business seeks to have a positive social impact, a reduced negative environmental impact, and a positive economic impact.

Sustainability Benefits

Businesses practicing sustainability improve their image and reputation, reduce costs, and help boost the local economy, all of which lead to improved business and stronger and healthier local communities for operations. Furthermore, these benefits set one company apart from its competitors and can become a source of competitive advantage.

Systems Thinking

The company that seeks to be a sustainable business should understand that sustainability is a company-wide goal that incorporates every aspect of the business and its relationships. In other words, sustainability requires systems thinking. Systems thinking is the awareness and understanding that everything is related in some way and that nothing exists in isolation. Every person, every department, every business, every industry, and every society are interrelated and connected in some way. Therefore, it is understood that each part of the business has a contribution to make in helping the company become a sustainable business.

What’s your purpose? Since, the world doesn’t care about you

I want to touch on the Principle of Work and Life. Let us reflect on what Nature is trying to teach us humans on the principle of work and life. Re-educating our minds becomes necessary to live a purposeful life.

Living in nobility. Nature has made it mandatory for each of us to live this life of sacrifice. Not one of self-interest but of nourishment. Nourishing one another, nature, plants, animals, our ecosystem. In short, we need to eschew all selfishness and self-interest.

Work and Live with a sense of worshipping the Universe. Consequently, when you hurt, destroy, damage others, plunder, and pillage resources, we hurt Nature. Sun, moon, sea, rivers, mountains, breeze, plants, animals, all seems to live for others. Humans too need to see this cycle and live the life of sacrifice. Nature is teaching us this principle of sacrifice.

Self-less action alone leads us to emancipation. Whatever a great person does, others also do. Whatever standards are set, the world follows it. We will perish if we were not to perform action. The learned should act only for the welfare of the world. Perform work with devotion, inspiring others to follow. Once we know every work is of equal importance, like each finger, what gives it magnificence is “how we do it”. What is the motive behind that, and with what feelings we do that work. This makes all the difference. Our duty is to serve that Power because of which we have the ability to work or do anything else.

Let us use our knowledge and discrimination to pursue a higher purpose at work and life!
